Shanghai Romance

"Rose Rose, I love you", if you ever heard this old Shanghai show tune is the perfect musical juxtaposition for our Shanghai Romance Wedding theme. Form fitting burgundy cheongsams complimented with grey pinstripe tuxedos, gramophone jazz music, blood roses and the decadence of 1920 Shanghai; these were all inspirational pieces to our decor that evening. But to really revisit the flamboyance of China's largest and oldest port, FE decide to kick it up a notch by moving out of our comfort zone. We decided to match-make the organic with the inorganic, flowers with electricity.

This gave birth to fuchsia Mokara Orchid crowns on 8 feet custom-made cooper poles, showcased in the crimson glow of scarlet lanterns and crystal ornaments. The final dotting of the 'i' in Shanghai Romance was the 24 feet by 12 feet billboard of the wedding couple complimented in the saffron glow of our scarlett running bulbs border. Yao Lee (姚莉) would been proud of our production that evening.

Last but not least, FE would like to take this opportunity to thank Chee Seng & Min for believing in our creativity and congratulate them on tying the knot on 12th June 2011. May your marriage be as eternal as the romance of Shanghai!!

The "Blonde Ambition"

A yellow wedding motive is not necessary the most common pick traditionally but of late this blonde ambition has grown in popularity stateside and the "yellow fever" is quickly spreading across wedding continents. Yellow is reminiscent of the rays of sunshine on a summer day, the joyful glow of a child's smile and also a spread of wild daffodils melting into a sea of gold and green. It's Fun-tastic, warm, rich yet mellow; a palette that works well in any and every season. Cue Beach Boys' "Seasons in the Sun"!!

When designing a yellow wedding theme, the most common flowers that are used are yellow roses. But in actuality there are quite a number of other choices for fresh "blonde" flowers in our country, they are:

Oriental Wedding Themed ~ Pinang Peranakan Mansion

It's February 18th 2011, 4 days after Valentines and a day after the Chinese Valentine (15th day of the Chinese Lunar New Year) which marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. It's the 1st day of the Chinese Lunar Year of the Rabbit and also the wedding of my sister in law, Mei. She has engaged FE to work their magic in decorating the Nyonya themed venue of Peranakan House in Church Street, Penang. By day, the location is a tourist attraction displaying vintage furniture, decor and artifacts of Nyonya descent but come night this location morphs into a magnificent spectacle of a retro Shanghai Chic wedding! Leave to team FE to pull it off!

Rather than just sticking with the cliche of fresh flowers, FE rocked out with paper pom-poms, handmade paper wind mills and mini "fengshui" fans. We complemented these with Cymbidium orchids and Mokara orchids which was transported all the way from our store in KL. Extra care on climate and humidity control had to be in placed to ensure that my "babies" make the trip in one piece.

This was also FE's virgin voyage for an out of town event so we were both anxious and excited!

Alas, with assistance from Mike(the groom) and Eugene(my groom) most of the heavy lifting was covered and I personally saw to the more intricate wedding details. The finish product was like time traveling back to 1920s China with the bride in crimson red cheongsam and the groom in a dapper grey 3 piece. The decor was not overly lavish and extravagant as we respected the bride and groom's wishes of keeping it a simple and intimate evening with family and friends. Here are some moments we like to share with you!!!

Edah & Yau Chung wanted their dream ROM before the traditional Chinese wedding reception which is planned for this October 2011. Both of them were extremely talented in their foray of designing their own wedding stationary which ranged from personalized invitation cards, guest thumbprint cards and message cards (to name a few). I personally adored their hand drawn wedding invitation; the really simple yet sweet matrimonial caricature of themselves complimented and completed the Vintage wedding theme like marshmallows in steaming hot chocolate (Match made in heaven!). Vintage Themes are the new up and comers in the wedding decorating scene, as there's not only a growing popularity State side but even locally nowadays. It's a highly sought after wedding theme for American wedding couples in general and the creative energy that goes into "vintaging" their weddings are endless. Think Betty Boopi-licious or Clark Gabulous!!! The sky's the limit here.

Sekeping Tenggiri, a hidden gem located in Bangsar, was the perfect venue for a Vintage Themed Wedding or Veddings. The natural and unpolished ambiance coupled with the LOHAS themed architecture are impeccably suited to kick "vintage" up a notch to "retro-cool". In order to commemorate the Lunar Chinese New Year and Valentine's day, Favors Essence has created a fabulous dessert bar for weddings to cater for our Oriental Parisian Chic wedding theme.

Many brides have difficulties deciding their theme colors come wedding crunch time and the over abundance of choices does not really help to simplify the task. Favors Essence has handpicked a set of niche and unique selection of theme colors and designs to ease the confusion. To ensure that you can never go wrong, we have picked only the hottest and hippest theme of the season and thrown in our own personal twist.

This year, Valentines day coincides with the 12th day of the Lunar Chinese New Year and we have chosen an Oriental/Parisian palette of Darling Red, Peach Pink & Turquoise Blue to mark this special occasion. We totally adore the color combination as it retains a sense of traditionalism that complements the romanticism in way of Wong Kar Wai's In the Mood For Love. FE has also dropped the fresh flowers in this theme and introduced handmade paper rosettes, windmills, paper fans and pompom flowers in jars, all for the sake of bringing Paris chic closer to the east.

We personalized little "喜喜" fans and seriously believe that this will be a great choice for replacing the cliche bridesmaid wrist corsage or bouquet which has been done over and over again.
We threw in the Dim Sum baskets with the patriotic sash ribbons to complete the wedding look for this Valentines/Lunar New Year! They are utterly adorable & highly practical for storing cakes, candies and other surprises-in-a-box. My Simple Sakura Spring Themed Wedding

I always adored a Sakura themed wedding as it symbolizes an emblem of eternal love and affection. Sakuras are thought to be good omens in the Japanese culture and it is a perfect representation of springtime in most Asian countries. The cherry blossom signifies a perfect marriage of contemporary

style with traditional roots and like all weddings it's timeless and will never go out of style.

Being a wedding planner, weddings have always been an everyday recurrence for myself. Thus, for my own wedding I decided that simplicity coupled with elegance was the best way to go. I wanted to avoid going into "work mode" or worst still, becoming "Bridezilla". I left most of the design work and floral decor ideas to my partner Jessie and focused only on the wedding program and coordination (can't leave everything to chance right?) This was made more bearable thanks to the assistance from my sister in law, Mei and her best friend Angie. Their experience working with events made all the difference in coordinating, MCing and the overall flow of the wedding.

As for music, we decided to set the mood with jazz classics from the 60s like Sinatra, Cole and even a touch of 70's pop from the Fab Four. Our march-in theme was immaculately tempo-ed by the sweet serenade of Old Blue Eye's - L.O.V.E!!! Alas, the biggest compliment we got for the song selections was that many of our guests decided to "steal" a copy of the wedding mix tape after our event to set the mood to their own weddings or that of their children and relatives.

My wedding venue housed only approximately 30 tables and we decided to keep the guest list to a moderate size, as with my extensive experience working with wedding events a crowd of around 300 guests is definitely easier to manage and you can really make it a more personal and casual evening. I recall having actually to remind my guests to take their seats in the main hall as they were over enjoying the pre-wedding cocktail mingling at the lounge area which took casual to a whole new height. Nevertheless, I loved the idea that the guests were comfortable and everyone felt at home and like a family - mission accomplished and I actually had the time and appetite to enjoy the food that evening.

A dream come true garden wedding for Jo Lynn & Michael

I remember first time I met Jo Lynn, She told me that she always wanted a Garden wedding (comparable to those in a climate country). However, in Malaysia weather is a key factor in defining if a garden event is possible due to it's unpredictable nature. With any garden weddings in a tropical climate, the risk of rain was 50/50 and Favors' had to roll the die on this one. But with the blessing of God and the promise of great weather, the event was a dream come true!!! This auspicious event took place in Bangsar Seafood Restaurant, which housed one of the best kept secret "garden" in Kuala Lumpur. The venue allowed Favor's Essence to showcase our creativity and awaken the full potential of a simple setting and realize a dream of couple in love. The wedding theme colors were yellow and purple, which is also straying away from the norm of traditional wedding palates. We believed strongly in the choice colors of our wedding couple and with this believe married with Favor's creativity, the end result was not less than a match made in heaven! But credit has to also be given to Jo & Mike, for handpicking the ivory laced fans and umbrellas and also DYI-ing the tree ornaments. This completed and complimented the setting with the couple's personal touches, making the perfect garden wedding theirs forever!

Wedding Venue ~ A White Wedding-worthy location

As some of you might know, one of the most famous wedding venues in KL, Carcosa Sri Negara has recently ended it's services indefinitely. It was a great shock to me as a wedding decorater when my client broke the news. It was as though Lennon was shot all over again. Carcosa left a void and some large shoes to fill.. it is not everyday that you come across a cottage perfect wedding venue as such.

However, rising from the ashes I recently found a diamond in the rough location that might actually meet such perfect garden wedding expectations. It's an unnamed ivory bungalow located off Jalan Gasing. Although it's never going to be like the 'original', I find it to have great potential as the next best location for garden receptions. This venue came highly recommended by the director of Jay's Perfect Dreams, Mr. Jayan and I'm completely sold! The soft emerald carpet grass lawn married with with the immaculate magnolia structure of the building and coupled by it's serene hill side locale makes it a White Wedding Worthy gem; hidden and unscathed by the suburbs of PJ. Alas, a picture tells a thousand words and I'll let mine speak...

Black & Pink

The combination of Black & Pink always carried a classy and elegant yet sweet persona. They bring about a sense of sophistication and feminity to the sanctity of a wedding day. The reason for Carmen (The Bride) to choose black & pink as the theme is because pink is her favourite colour and black is Daniel(The Groom) favourite as well. Thus is a perfect marriage of colours. Besides these colours, Carmen also insists on having green flower balls & lanterns as part of the decor. This uncommon mesh of colours and design seems to mate perfectly at the end, giving birth to a magical event of pinks, blacks & greens.

A ROM(Registration of Marriage) is a must-do legal procedure to ensure that your marriage to your spouse is recognized by the government of any country. Most couples choose to do their ROM before the actual wedding reception but there are also couples who prefer to have their ROM plus the reception on the same day. Wedding Venue ~ Jarrod & Rawlins, Garden

I came across a branch outlet of Jarrod & Rawlins recently which is a perfect place for a garden wedding. The venue is a refurbished bungalow with a beautiful garden terrace setting nestled in quiet locale of Jalan Dungun in Damansara Heights (next to The Courtyard restaurant). Food wise, Jarrod is no longer a stranger in Klang Valley as they provide massive selections of gourmet style deli food with signature dishes such as bacon sandwiches, pork knuckles, gourmet sausages as well as their infamous "Hang-over Breakfast"(My personal favorite!).

I have recently visited them for a weekend brunch and really enjoyed their Al Fresco style dining, complimented with a serene sun-drenched environment and good food. You can also choose their cozy air-conditioned indoor fine dining section if you not an outdoors person.

The restaurant's garden terrace fits an estimate of 120 to 150 persons for a garden ceremony in theater style seating. This area is surrounded by lots of trees which provided ample shade for sunnier days. You may also fit your guest into the open balcony section overlooking the garden for the "makan" session during the event. As mentioned above, if you are not the "one-with-the-great-outdoors" type, you may choose to have a private party setting at the air conditioned fine dining section which serves both brunch and dinner. Lastly, the theme color of this fine dining establishment is black, white & beige which are palette friendly to floral decor.

I have been thinking to update my blog since last week but I have been too busy with wedding discussions and preparations of late. Alas, I've finally manage to sneak some time out of my busy schedule to compose a short entry.

Yup! We were at the Noble Banquet Restaurant in Bukit Bintang last week on 24.05.09 for a wedding decoration. The wedding reception's theme color was champagne and baby pink, hence we went with roses matching the theme for our floral decor. FE was in charge of supplying the wedding favors as well, which was a nicely packaged miniature ivory "Precious Moments" wedding notebook, completing the immacute wedding scene. Therefore, I would like to share with you our 'efforts' and some samples of our handiwork below. Enjoy!

Wedding Venue ~ Kissaten @ PJ Jaya One

You might be curious as to why am I writing a blog about Kissaten when they are not an official choice wedding venue. Alas, give this post a chance, read on and you will understand why I decided to write a piece about them.

It's my second time visiting Kissaten last Saturday night when the waitress eagerly recommended their balcony on the 3rd floor as a choice dining spot. Curious, I decide to give it a try as I never did notice that they have a small balcony during my first visit there! Lo behold! It was a great source of inspiration for me... I discovered a nice balcony for a potential Alfresco style wedding solemnization or even private events:- bride's hens night or even a lo-fi birthday party. This balcony is about 600 sq feet and it accommodates approximately 30 - 50 pax in theater seating or a maximum of 30 pax in a long table setting. Though the balcony is surrounded by office spaces, the restaurant owner had done an excellent job of distracting the view with shady greenery and draped fairy lights, bringing about a romantic ambiance marrying the night scene perfectly. This relaxed atmosphere paired with a constant breeze made my Kissaten dining experience an unforgettable one. Also, privacy is ensured as they have only one entrance/exit, allowing the section to be closed off to an invitation only setting if required.

Lastly, I should also share with you my opinion about the food & beverage that Kissaten offers. Basically this restaurant serves easy-to-prepare home style Japanese fusion food. They provide a range of pizzas, sandwiches, pastas, noodles and their renowned dessert, the "Truly no. 1 Cheesecake" (as mentioned on their blog). For beverage, they serve Illy coffee (my personal favourite), Paulaner beer....and Oh did I mention Haagen Daz ice cream is on the menu as well. The pricing is also quite reasonable as its around RM30 for a set lunch or dinner which includes salad, soup, a main course and a drink. Service was great with zero complaints!

FYI - I think they have never held any wedding ceremonies there before (as far as I know). Maybe one of you lucky readers can be the first ones if you like the idea. Again I am not entirely sure if the place can be used for a private function, but one can always give a call to the owner to confirm. If you don't try you will never know, right? Wedding Venue ~ Church Wedding, St Francis Xavier, Jln Gasing

To have a wedding ceremony in a beautiful church is every little girl's childhood fantasy (one of mine at least). Like a typical marriage setting in a romantic Hollywood movie: a nice church in Italy, a gorgeous groom and a pretty bride, stunning wedding decorations, 2 sets of happy parents and a bunch of close friends. We all at one point dreamt of being there.

I Googled the church's information after speaking to my client who is going to have her wedding ceremony at the specified venue and I found their website. This is to better respect the sanctity of this sacred venue and to ensure that we adhere to the rules of this church prior to prepping for the wedding decorations. A small price for pay for being able to make 2 persons dream wedding come through.

Here are the dos & don't s wedding guide for this church, I got them from their website.

1. Make sure that your wedding does NOT fall on the following days as SFX does not solemnize marriages on these days:

a) Public Holidays, Sundays & *Mondays

b) Two (2) weeks before and one (1) week after Easter

c) One (1) week before and after Christmas

Note: *for exception please refer to the office

2. Come personally so that you may be briefed properly. DO NOT send a third party to make the wedding booking for you.

3. Remember to confirm your wedding booking two (2) months before your wedding date. Your booking deposit will be forfeited if you fail to do so.

4. Do not have your marriage civilly registered BEFORE you have completed the PNE with the priest. The Pre-Nuptial Enquiry (PNE) is done to make sure that you do not have any impediments to the marriage.

5. You are advised not to send out invitations until the PNE has taken place and dispensation (if any) has been obtained.

6. Please ensure that the bride, bridesmaids and lady lectors are attired appropriately to be in a place of worship, e.g. no plunging neckline, bare back, mini skirts, high slits. etc.

7. The throwing of confetti or blowing of soap bubbles is strictly not allowed in Church. It is difficult to clean up in time for other Masses.

8. Do not make last minute changes to the names of your witnesses once they have already been recorded in the Marriage Register.

9. Please be punctual for your special day. Do not be late as it may affect other Mass arrangements or disrupt the priests' other schedules.

10. The commentators and readers are to be selected by the couple. They should be Catholics.

Wedding Venue ~ V-Garden Restaurant,Klang

Jessie & I visited the V-Garden Restaurant today. This restaurant is located next to Plaza Centro in Klang. The building has 2 stories, and my client had booked the restaurant on first floor as his wedding venue. He actually wanted the ground floor (the ground floor of the restaurant has just been newly renovated) but it was already booked by another wedding couple.

V-Garden provides some basic decorations in their package, which includes ceiling drapes(as the photo attached), an artificial flower arch, several artificial flower poises for the main table & organza decorations for the staircase. The layout of room is not entirely favorable as it houses a total of 8 pillars but V-Garden makes up for it with 4 LCD screens and 2 television sets ensuring that guest can have a better view of the event at hand. The maximum pax for this venue is 600 persons.

Before Meeting the Wedding Decorator....

If you wonder what you should do before meeting up with your wedding decorator, I am here to share with you some tips.

~ Do some research on the theme you like, get to know the names of some type of flowers(especially the one you favor!!)
~ Set a budget for your decoration (ranging from minimum to maximum)
~ Check with the confirmed venue, whether decorators are allowed or do they firstly need to fill permission forms to allow them access to the venue.
~ Check also if the confirmed venue provides a time frame for your decorator to do the setting up or preparations for your decorations.
~ Check for additional charges if there’s requirements to operate the air-conditioning at the venue few hours prior to the wedding or any other hidden costs involved.
~ Finally check out the website of your decorator of choice, their port folio or promotional packages before contacting them personally.
~ Additional cost saving methods include, checking with your best friends or relatives to see if they will be willing to engage the same decorator to negotiate for a better offer!!!

What you should ask or confirm with your decorator:

~ Are they booked with another customer on the date for your big day?
~ Are they familiar with the venue? Arrange for the decorator to visit the venue before going into the discussion.
~Have they done an event with the similar theme(you want) before? If yes, do they have any photos to share?
~ What do they think about the theme? Is it achievable with your current budget? If not, do they have any better ideas?
~ Is your budget sufficient? Do not hesitate to share it with them as this will assist them to provide better options/ideas.
~ Will they sketch the decor (roughly what they will use for the decor) if it is a customized design?(Mockups are usually billable to the customers, unless such themes has been done before, in which you may request for pictures.)
~ Can you visit their upcoming events to sample their handiwork? This is a good way to gauge if their skills and professionalism are up to your expectations.
~ Can they itemize the billing? Make sure the payment methods are clear before confirming the package. Get everything in printed in a “black & white” quotation & check before you sign the agreement.

Wedding Venue ~ Flower Drum Restaurant, Bukit Bintang

Flower Drum is a famous Chinese restaurant for holding wedding receptions, located in Bukit Bintang, KL. This restaurant has 2 stories, ground floor which houses the restaurant that mainly serves ala carte Chinese food and the ballroom which is on the first floor.

The ballroom can fit in up to 600 pax for a wedding reception setting with the exception of a few pillars blocking several guest tables on the left. Flower drum provides their own wedding decoration package but they only use fully artificial flowers. Lacking originality, I’m quite confident that the restaurant has reused the flowers numerous times. To my personal opinion, they are look tired, overused and hideous!!

The theme of this upcoming wedding which FE will undertake is “Mickey & Minnie”. For all you Disney fans out there, FE will try our very best to make this memorable & magical!!! After visiting the venue, we can’t wait to share our many ideas with the lucky couple. We swear we will share with you all the extravagances once the wedding dinner is over. Decorators honors!

Wedding Venue ~ Putrajaya Seafood Restaurant

Today Jessie and I went to Putrajaya Seafood Restaurant. This place was introduced by my friend’s sister who is going to have her wedding ceremony and dinner on Jan 2010 at this location. We have never decorated this restaurant before and it was our first visit.The restaurant is located at botanical garden in Putrajaya Percint 1. It is surrounded by very beautiful landscaping. I am deeply in love with the lakeview because it is a very relaxing atmosphere. More so if you are travelling all the way from KL.

The bride and groom just met up with us last week for a discussion. They had choose the Red & white theme and gerbera will be the theme flower for their wedding. Hosnestly speaking, we are cracking our brain for the solemnization part of the wedding. The restaurant has plenty of place but it is hard to find a place that can cater for 80 persons in theatre style seating. This is due to the fact that they have too many gazebos staggered around the place. Finally, we found the perfect area to hold the ceremony… Whooooh problem solved!

The restaurant can fit a maximum of 25 tables but the only dissapointment is the table arrangements have to be staggered which is not a formal banquet setting. For couples who prefer a more casual setting, this is will not pose as a real issue.

Frankly speaking, this is the first garden wedding for FE,we know Jasmine loves the colour pink and has a passion for all things sweet and cute. We customized her dream garden wedding based on her desires.

Heart to Heart, we took the whole night to make them..

I received her message yesteday, she said thanks for the help! The decor was beautiful and the ceremony was wonderful. FE greatful to hear that from her and we know this will be one of the most cheerish and memorable in their life.

Favors Essence has added some new wedding favors now!! I was occupied with this project for about a month. Finally, its done!!

I want to take this opportunity to say thanks to my friend - Huannchin for his help & effort! He flew all the way from Penang to KL for FE product’s shooting last week. Another wonderful job!As he told me the most difficult part was the cupcake’s shooting, but i think they are the best photos amongst the lot.

Favors Essence has a new idol. The idol is “tang tang tang tangggg” MangoRed from Philippines, they was introduced by our partner – photographer Mr. Huannchin.

Not sure whether you have heard of them. They are brothers and they have mentioned they are not only photographer but artist. Their artworks really impressed us!! We love them very much. The angles, the moments, and the graphics…really cool stuffs. You have to check this out!!

If you are staying around the PJ area, and you are planning to have a quaint 150 pax wedding reception and a unique theme wedding, look no further. Check out the Brasserie Laplace as my personal recommendation to you.

Chances are you may have heard of this restaurant - it’s located in PJ’s Uptown SS21. I believe lots of you might have even visited once or twice. This European fine dining restaurant is 2 floors above the HSBC bank in Uptown and I have finally got a chance to test the food yesterday. All I can say is “Compliment to the Chef!”. The food was amazing and so was the ambiance. The restaurant area is spacious and cosy. Service is good, and waiters were attentive. Brasserie Laplace is decorated with contemporary style furniture with a smart Black & White theme. The bubble designed wallpapers, elegant chandeliers, round or square glass dining tables and black ergonomic tall chairs compliments the decor immaculately. I personally love the design of the chairs. The establishment is divided into two sections : Non-smoking and smoking, with a retractable wood and glass partition. This allows the venue to house more people if the event/function requires it. Take note that they do cater for private events in buffet or ala carte western style settings.

The black and white theme wedding is a sizzling hit in countries like the US but here in Malaysia we are still rather conservative with the color choices. Many wedding couples or family’s in Malaysia still “pantang” or shun the colour black to be used in auspicious events, especially with Chinese couples whom will prefer go for “Hong” or a red theme decor. But to break tradition and take a bold step forward - Black is the new Red. I have personally handled a black & white themed Malay wedding reception in Sheraton Subang Hotel and I’ve got nothing but praises on the classy and unparalleled boldness of it’s decor. A good daring choice will give your wedding guests a night to remember in the years to come or even inspiration for their next wedding.

Take a moment to imagine the restaurant enhanced with summer white lilies, luscious red & pink roses and laced with pearls ornaments. There’s even a private room near the entrance which one can turn into a changing room for the bride.
